The Quantitative Quality Indicators (QQIs) are one of the most used method of assuring proper field direction and adequate field strength. A Gaussmeter is frequently used together with QQIs to set up the inspection procedure for a specific component. Wet method is the only one applicable, and like other verification devices, they can only be used with continuous magnetization.

The QQI is a thin strip of either 0.002” or 0.004”-inch-thick AISI 1005 steel. A photoengraving process is used to inscribe a specific pattern, such as concentric circles or a plus sign. QQIs are normally 3/4 inch square, but smaller shims are also available. QQIs must be positioned in close contact with the tested piece.
